Chinese for Affirmative Action joined other civil rights groups to oppose a dangerous and poorly-conceived proposal from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) that would increase racial profiling, perpetuate harmful stereotypes, invade our privacy, and make us all less safe.
If the proposal implemented, travelers from China would be forced to turn over their private social media identifiers or “handles” to the U.S. government.
Like other recent attempts to demonize immigrants, people of color, and Muslims, this proposal singles out one community — in this case tourists and business visitors from China — without clear limits, protections, or reasonable justifications.
At a press conference organized by Asian Americans Advancing Justice – Asian Law Caucus, CAA and allies explained the proposal and how it is connected to the historic and current discrimination faced by Chinese Americans and others, and the imperative to resist whenever any community faces injustice.
